Wildlife

The interior of Belait District, reached via Jalan Labi from Bandar Seri Begawan — a mix of village outskirts, rubber and fruit gardens, and rainforest parks that 1StopBorneo Wildlife has been quietly exploring by night drive, in Brunei's low season for tourism generally. Kampong Teraja, an Iban longhouse further along the same road, adds a waterfall trek (a roughly 40-minute uphill hike to Wasai Teraja's plunge pool) as a daytime pairing with the night drives. On a January 2025 joint trip, Mike Gordon (Adventure Alternative Borneo) and Shavez Cheema (1StopBorneo Wildlife) logged nine species across two drives — banded civet, numerous palm civets, greater mouse-deer, leopard cat, flying foxes on a fruiting ficus, brown wood-owl and a bronzeback snake on the first night; red leaf monkeys, two binturongs, lesser mouse-deer, buffy fish-owl, nightjars and two slow lorises on the second. Shavez's team has previously recorded clouded leopard and sun bear twice each, marbled cat three times, flat-headed cat twice, plus yellow-throated marten, pangolins, moon rat and tufted ground squirrel here — genuine potential for Brunei's harder carnivores, still very much under-explored.
