A large, slender-snouted crocodilian specialised for catching fish, with a long, narrow jaw quite different from the broader snout of the saltwater crocodile. Found in rivers, swamps and peat-forest waterways.

Endangered, with numbers reduced across its range by habitat loss and historic hunting. Despite the name, it is not a true gharial but a related, similarly fish-adapted species restricted to Southeast Asia.
