The largest tortoise on the Asian mainland and Sundaic islands, with a domed shell and a preference for damp forest habitat rather than the drier terrain favoured by many tortoise species elsewhere.

Feeds on fallen fruit, fungi and vegetation on the forest floor, an important seed disperser for some large-fruited forest plants. Slow-breeding and heavily impacted by hunting across its range, making it an uncommon sighting today.
