A large river terrapin, males developing striking breeding colouration — a red-and-white striped head and pale blue-grey shell tinge — during the nesting season, found in larger rivers and estuaries.
Critically Endangered, with nesting beaches and river populations severely reduced across its range by egg collection, habitat loss and river disturbance. A genuinely rare sighting anywhere in Sabah today.
