Ulu Temburong National Park

Pristine rainforest

Known as the "Green Jewel of Brunei" — largely untouched lowland and hill rainforest reached by a road journey from Bandar Seri Begawan (around an hour, crossing the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien bridge) followed by a longboat leg up the Temburong River, a combination that keeps visitor numbers naturally low. Its best-known feature is an aluminium canopy walkway that climbs to around 50m, high enough to put you above the canopy rather than just inside it, with views across an unbroken expanse of forest that's increasingly rare anywhere in Borneo. Brunei's oil wealth has meant comparatively little pressure to log or convert this forest, which is a large part of why it's stayed so intact.

Best for: canopy walkway, boat access, pristine forest
Mammals: Long-tailed Macaque, Proboscis Monkey
Birds: Rhinoceros Hornbill, Great Argus
Other: Bornean Gibbon, Oriental Pied Hornbill
