Trusan Sugut (Turusan Sugut)

Emerging / remote

An 8,680-hectare Class I forest reserve wedged between the Beluran and Paitan districts, upgraded to full protection status only in 2014 — meaning it's still one of the least-visited forest blocks in Sabah despite genuinely strong wildlife. Access is by longboat along the Sugut River or 4x4 track, which alone keeps casual visitor numbers low. Surveys here have logged over 330 bird species alongside orangutans, banteng and proboscis monkeys, making it a serious option for anyone wanting Kinabatangan-level wildlife without the crowds.

Best for: Orangutans, Banteng, Proboscis Monkeys, 330+ bird species
Mammals: Bornean Orangutan, Banteng, Proboscis Monkey, Silvered Langur
Birds: Storm's Stork, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Lesser Adjutant
Turtles & Crocs: Saltwater Crocodile
Other: Oriental Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Sea Eagle

Accommodation

Frederick Kugan Base Camp offers air-conditioned two- and three-bedroom chalets, a resthouse and shared dorms, with generator power (solar coming) and an open-air communal dining hall — no resort-style services, but comfortable for how remote the site is.
