Trus Madi

Mountain

Malaysia's second-highest peak at 2,642m, just 70km from Kota Kinabalu but a world apart in visitor numbers — there's no cable car or paved summit trail here, just a steep, often muddy climb through five distinct vegetation zones. That relative obscurity is the draw: montane specialists like Whitehead's trogon and Whitehead's broadbill that are hit-or-miss on the crowded trails of Kinabalu Park are seen here with better odds, and the mountain's pitcher plants and invertebrates include species found on Trus Madi and almost nowhere else.

Best for: challenging trekking, endemic plants, montane birds
Birds: Whitehead's Trogon, Whitehead's Broadbill, Whitehead's Spiderhunter, Crimson-headed Partridge, Mountain Serpent-eagle, Bare-headed Laughingthrush
Other: Bornean Green Magpie, Friendly Bush-warbler, Bornean Endemic Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes spp.), Fruithunter

Accommodation

Basic and route-dependent: the main Kaingaran Trail has a base camp at the trailhead and a small bunk-bed rest house higher up, while other trails have no built structures at all — tent camping only.
