Wildlife
Home to Camp Leakey, the orangutan research and rehabilitation site founded by Birutė Galdikas in 1971 and still active today — one of the longest-running great ape studies anywhere in the world. Reaching the park means flying into Pangkalan Bun and driving to the river town of Kumai, since the park itself is accessible only by water from there. Multi-day safaris aboard traditional wooden klotok houseboats, sleeping on deck under mosquito nets, travel blackwater rivers through peat swamp forest between feeding stations — Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui among them — making this one of the most immersive and reliably productive orangutan-watching trips anywhere in Borneo.
Multi-day klotok houseboat safaris are the standard way to visit, sleeping on the open deck under mosquito nets with linen changed nightly; some operators offer air-conditioned private cabins, and Rimba Eco Lodge is the one land-based option inside the park itself.
