Wildlife

A family-run homestay in Sukau led by Osman, a veteran Kinabatangan boatman and guide whom guests repeatedly praise for finding animals others miss; reviewers also mention that he has guided wildlife documentary crews, including David Attenborough's. His trips are strongly mammal-focused — pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and orangutans — and many guests have seen Sunda Clouded Leopard with him, alongside rarities such as Flat-headed Cat and Helmeted Hornbill, though sightings always vary from trip to trip. Crocodiles are a regular sight on the river, and photos from Osman's own page also show owls and a Black-and-red Broadbill, so bring binoculars and a strong torch for the night cruises. With so many photogenic species along the river, it also makes a good base for wildlife photography.
Simple, clean rooms with air-conditioning and a fan, in a green-painted chalet-style block set on a lawn. Meals are a highlight, with guests praising the cooking and vegetarian catering. Reviewers advise staying more than one or two nights to improve your odds of key sightings.
