Kinabalu Park

Montane / UNESCO

Borneo's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, built around Mount Kinabalu — at 4,095m the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. The mountain's huge elevation range packs half a dozen distinct vegetation zones into a single trail system, from lowland rainforest through mossy cloud forest to stunted alpine scrub near the granite summit plateau. That range in altitude and cooler climate supports plants and birds found nowhere in Sabah's lowlands — including several pitcher plant species that grow only on this mountain.

Best for: montane birds, pitcher plants, cool-climate trekking
Birds: Whitehead's Broadbill, Whitehead's Trogon, Whitehead's Spiderhunter, Crimson-headed Partridge, Mountain Serpent-eagle, Bare-headed Laughingthrush
Plants: Low's Pitcher Plant
Other: Bornean Green Magpie, Kinabalu Giant Squirrel, Friendly Bush-warbler
