Imbak Canyon

Conservation area

A rugged sandstone canyon reserve that, together with Danum Valley and Maliau Basin, anchors the "Heart of Sabah" conservation corridor — a connected block of protected forest large enough to sustain wide-ranging species like clouded leopards and elephants long-term. Its canyon terrain and 300-metre cliffs create microhabitats not found in the surrounding lowlands, and because access is limited to guided research and expedition trips, the forest here sees a fraction of the visitor traffic of its more famous neighbours.

Best for: research-grade biodiversity, guided expeditions
Mammals: Bornean Orangutan, Marbled Cat, Western Tarsier, Tufted Ground Squirrel, Binturong
Birds: Great Argus, Helmeted Hornbill, Bornean Bristlehead
Other: Bornean Gibbon, Banded Pitta
