Danau Sentarum National Park

Floodplain wetland

A vast seasonal floodplain lake system in West Kalimantan, connected to the Kapuas River and dramatically transformed by the annual flood cycle — during the wet season the lakes can expand many times over, turning forest into open water and back again within months. That flood pulse drives an unusually productive freshwater fishery that local communities have relied on for generations, and the same nutrient-rich waters support proboscis monkeys, waterbirds and the Malaysian false gharial along the forested lake margins.

Best for: seasonal floodplain, freshwater biodiversity, boat access
Mammals: Proboscis Monkey
Birds: Storm's Stork, Lesser Adjutant, White-bellied Sea-Eagle
Turtles & Crocs: Malaysian False Gharial

Accommodation

A basic resort/guesthouse on Bukit Tekenang, a hill at the centre of the lake, is generally considered the best overnight option, alongside village homestays arranged through tour operators.
