Batang Ai

Orangutan / dam lake

Centred on a vast hydroelectric lake in southern Sarawak near the Kalimantan border, Batang Ai National Park and the forest surrounding its lake are considered one of the most important strongholds for wild, genetically distinct orangutans in Sarawak. Reaching the park means a boat journey across the lake itself, passing traditional Iban longhouse communities who have lived along its forested shores for generations — a rare combination of serious wildlife habitat and living indigenous culture in the same trip.

Best for: wild Orangutans, Iban longhouse culture, boat access
Mammals: Bornean Orangutan, Long-tailed Macaque
Birds: Rhinoceros Hornbill, Storm's Stork
Other: Bornean Gibbon
