About the Speckled Lanternfly

A boldly patterned lantern bug named for the fine speckling across its wings, most often spotted resting head-down on tree trunks in lowland forest, where the mottled pattern breaks up its outline against bark.

Like all Fulgoridae, it feeds by piercing bark or stems with a needle-like proboscis and drawing sap, spending most of its life motionless on a single tree unless disturbed, when it flies in a short, clumsy burst to the next trunk.

Not assessed for conservation status; like most Fulgoridae it has no dedicated population data, but sap-feeding on a wide range of tree species makes it less habitat-specific than many rainforest insects.
