A shy crake with a rufous head and breast and finely barred belly, keeping to dense cover at the margins of marshes and flooded fields.
Now considered Near-threatened, this East Asian breeder is an uncommon passage migrant or winter visitor to Borneo's wetlands, rarely seen in the open.
