A compact crake with a warm rufous breast and dark barred flanks, skulking through dense wetland grasses and easily overlooked despite being widespread.
Usually detected by its sharp, repeated calls at dawn and dusk, foraging cautiously at the edges of paddies, ditches and marshy pools.
