A small, plain woodpecker with a brown cap, finely barred underparts and males showing a small red patch on the nape, often overlooked among foliage in the lower and middle storey.
Gleans small branches and twigs for insects and larvae, joining mixed-species flocks, and adapts readily to forest edge, secondary growth and even well-wooded gardens.
