A tiny, active woodpecker with a grey-brown cap, streaked underparts and a small red nape patch in males, one of the smallest woodpeckers in the region.
Forages acrobatically on thin branches and twigs for small insects and their larvae, often in mixed flocks, and tolerates disturbed and secondary habitats well.
