A semi-aquatic monitor lizard with an unusual diet for the family, feeding heavily on crustaceans and molluscs as an adult rather than the more varied vertebrate-heavy diet of most monitors, using blunt teeth adapted for crushing shells.

Found near rivers, swamps and mangroves, generally more secretive than the water monitor, spending significant time in and around water.
