A quail-like ground bird with barred flanks and a stout bluish-grey bill, females notably brighter and larger than males.
As with other buttonquails, sex roles are reversed: the female initiates courtship and, after laying, leaves the male to incubate the eggs and raise the chicks alone in dense grass cover.
