The smallest and most distinctive of Borneo's porcupines, with short, bristle-like spines rather than long banded quills, and a notably long, scaled tail tipped with a cluster of hollow, rattle-like bristles used to make a warning sound.
Nocturnal and more arboreal than other porcupines, climbing into low vegetation as well as foraging on the ground for fruit and roots. Its tail-rattle is a useful, if rarely heard, clue to its presence.
