The larger of Borneo's two mouse-deer species (chevrotains, not true deer), standing only around 30cm at the shoulder, with a plain reddish-brown coat and no antlers or horns in either sex. Males instead have small tusk-like upper canines.
Solitary and mainly nocturnal, foraging on fallen fruit, fungi and leaves along the forest floor. Frequently caught in torchlight or camera traps as a quick, low, fast-moving shape crossing a trail.
