The smaller of Borneo's two mouse-deer species, and among the smallest hoofed mammals in the world, with a delicate build and a distinctive pale throat patch broken into a chain-like pattern.
Solitary, shy and mainly nocturnal, foraging on fallen fruit and low vegetation. Told from the greater mouse-deer mainly by its smaller size and clearer throat markings when a good look is possible.
