A blue-green kingfisher with buff underparts and a broad dark eye-stripe, breeding across Australia and the southwest Pacific with some populations migrating north into Southeast Asia outside the breeding season.
Takes a varied diet of fish, crabs, insects and small lizards from perches over mangroves, tidal flats and open woodland, plunging down onto prey rather than diving into open water.
