A striking flycatcher, males trailing long ribbon-like white or rufous tail streamers behind a glossy blue-black head and crest — one of the more elegant birds of the forest understorey. Only recently split as a distinct species from the wider Asian paradise-flycatcher complex.
Sallies out from a perch to catch flying insects, often drawing attention with active, restless movements and a scolding call as it follows mixed-species foraging flocks through the mid-storey.
