A tiny, boldly marked owl with false 'eyes' on the back of its head, an adaptation thought to deter attacks from behind, found in hill and montane forest.
Unusually for an owl, it is often active by day as well as at night, and its rhythmic, repeated whistled call frequently draws mobbing flocks of small birds.
