A small, dumpy waterbird, breeding adults dark with a chestnut throat and cheek patch and a pale spot at the bill base, diving frequently and buoyantly for food.
Widespread across the Old World, it is a scarce but resident species on Borneo's still freshwater bodies, often overlooked as it dives at the first sign of disturbance.
