A large native rat with a robust build and a plain brownish coat, found in lowland forest and considered a genuine forest species rather than the disturbance-associated black rat.
Nocturnal and terrestrial to semi-arboreal, foraging on fruit, seeds and invertebrates. Recorded on night drives and camera traps more often than seen directly by visitors.
