A Bornean-endemic serpent-eagle restricted to montane forest on Kinabalu and a handful of other high mountains, closely related to the widespread crested serpent-eagle of the lowlands but replacing it at altitude.
Hunts snakes, lizards and other small vertebrates, typically soaring over montane forest canopy or perching quietly at the forest edge; its high-elevation range makes it one of the more range-restricted raptors to look for on a Kinabalu trip.
