The largest deer species in Sabah, with a shaggy dark brown coat, a maned neck in males, and — in mature stags — large three-tined antlers. Found in both lowland and montane forest, including around Kinabalu Park.
Mainly active at dusk, dawn and at night, browsing on leaves, shoots and fallen fruit, often solitary or in small loose groups. A key prey species for the clouded leopard across much of its Sabah range.
