A striking, snipe-like bird with a broad white eye-patch and creamy stripe down the back, the female more colourful than the male, as is typical for this species.
Skulks in marshy vegetation and rice paddies, with sex roles reversed as in other painted-snipes: the female mates with multiple males, leaving each to incubate and rear the brood alone.
