A large, striking ground squirrel with a long, exceptionally bushy tail — proportionally one of the bushiest tails of any mammal relative to body size — and a coat that ranges from grey-brown to blackish depending on the population.
Terrestrial and diurnal, foraging on the forest floor for fruit, seeds and invertebrates. Uncommon and considered a good find rather than a routine sighting; there have historically been (likely exaggerated) local stories about its diet and behaviour, so treat colourful anecdotes with a pinch of salt.
