One of the largest bat species in the world, with a wingspan that can exceed 1.5m, a fox-like face (the source of the name) and no echolocation — flying foxes navigate and forage by sight and smell alone.
Roosts communally by day in large, noisy tree colonies, sometimes numbering hundreds of individuals, and disperses at dusk to feed on fruit and nectar over long distances — an important long-range seed disperser and pollinator for many forest trees.
