A smaller relative of the large flying fox, strongly associated with small islands, coastal forest and mangroves rather than the interior mainland forest favoured by its larger cousin.
Roosts communally in coastal trees by day and forages by night on fruit, nectar and blossom, navigating by sight and smell alone like all flying foxes. Best looked for on small offshore islands and coastal reserves.
