A highly specialised small wild cat with a flattened skull, small low-set ears and partially webbed feet, built for hunting fish, frogs and crustaceans in and around water. One of the more distinctive-looking small cats anywhere in the world.

Strongly tied to wetlands, rivers and swamp forest, and rarely found far from water. Deramakot Forest Reserve is one of the more consistent sites for sightings, usually along quiet stream crossings on night drives. Endangered, with wetland loss and drainage a major threat.
