A large, distinctive tree frog with rough, granular skin and a raised bony ridge running above the eardrum (the 'file ear' of its name), one of the most recognisable and frequently encountered tree frogs in Sabah.
Builds a foam nest on vegetation above water, and is common enough around lodges and forest pools to be one of the more reliable frog sightings on a night walk.
