A venomous pit viper with heat-sensing pits between the eyes and nostrils used to detect warm-blooded prey, typically green with a pattern of darker markings, found in low vegetation in forest.
An ambush predator, coiling motionless on a branch or leaf and striking passing prey, feeding on small mammals, birds and lizards. Medically significant if it bites — treat all pit vipers with caution and keep well clear of low vegetation when moving through forest at night.
