A small, eared owl of montane forest, rufous to grey-brown with fine dark streaking, one of the more frequently heard owls on Borneo's mountains.
Gives a distinctive rising, tremulous whistled call after dark, and is regularly encountered on night walks in the highland forests around Kinabalu and the Crocker Range.
