A dark-backed tropical tern similar to the Sooty Tern but paler and browner above, with a broader white collar, occurring around Bornean coasts and reefs as a scarce visitor.
Often seen resting on floating debris or buoys far from shore, and feeds by dipping to the surface over tuna and other predatory fish that drive small prey upward.
