A stocky, hunch-backed heron with a black crown and back contrasting against pale grey wings and underparts, and striking red eyes — active mainly at dusk and after dark, unlike most other herons.
Roosts communally in waterside trees by day, dispersing at night to hunt fish, frogs and invertebrates in shallow water, ponds and ditches.
