One of three Bornean slow loris species formally split from the wider Sunda slow loris group by Munds, Nekaris & Ford in 2013, on the basis of quantitative analysis of facial mask markings and genetics. Identification rests on a dark facemask that stays close to the eyes and does not reach past the cheekbones, a rectangular pale stripe between the eyes reaching the white cheek fur, and brown-to-reddish 'frosted' (white-tipped) fur — subtle distinctions that make confident field separation from the neighbouring Kayan River slow loris and Philippine slow loris genuinely difficult, especially where their ranges meet.
Restricted to southern, south-western and central Kalimantan, roughly between the Kapuas River in the north and the Barito River in the south. Shares the genus's toxic bite (from a gland near the elbow mixed with saliva), slow deliberate climbing gait and strictly nocturnal habits. Vulnerable (IUCN); species-specific field data remains limited given how recently it was distinguished from its relatives.
