A widespread Sundaland forest rat with a clean white belly contrasting sharply against a darker back and tail — the feature behind its common name.
Nocturnal and arboreal to semi-arboreal, foraging in the understorey and lower canopy for fruit, seeds and insects. One of the more regularly trapped forest rats in Bornean small-mammal surveys.
