A migratory hawk-owl with dark brown upperparts and streaked underparts, passing through or wintering in Bornean forest and woodland edge after breeding further north in East Asia.
Active from dusk, hunting large insects and small vertebrates in short sallying flights, and best located by its repeated, hollow double-noted call from a forest perch.
