One of Borneo's smallest squirrels, closely resembling the least pygmy squirrel but distinguished by bold white and black facial markings around the ears — the field mark behind its name.
Diurnal and arboreal, scurrying over tree trunks and branches in lowland forest in search of bark, lichen and occasional fruit. Poorly studied and easily confused with the similarly tiny least pygmy squirrel without a clear view of the face.
