A medium-sized, typically all-black cobra capable of spraying venom defensively toward the eyes of a perceived threat from some distance, in addition to a venomous bite — treat any cobra sighting with serious caution and never approach closely.

Found in a range of habitats from forest to plantations and villages, feeding on small vertebrates including rodents and other snakes, and raising a hood when threatened as a warning display before spraying or striking.
