A compact, big-headed brown flycatcher with diffuse dusky streaking on the breast, a pale eye-ring and a shorter primary projection than similar Muscicapa flycatchers.
A winter visitor to Borneo from its Siberian breeding grounds, hunting from a favoured perch and returning to it repeatedly, often in forest edge or hill forest.
