A small wild mouse of open, grassy habitat and cultivated land, distinct from the fully commensal house mice that live directly alongside people, though it will readily use ricefields and forest-edge clearings.
Mainly nocturnal, foraging on the ground for grass seeds, grain and invertebrates. More a species of open, disturbed ground than of primary forest.
