A small, reddish-brown deer with short, simple antlers in males and prominent facial scent glands. One of the most widespread deer species in Southeast Asia, tolerant of a wide range of forest conditions.
Mostly solitary, foraging on fruit, shoots and leaves, and known for a loud, dog-like bark used as an alarm call — often the first sign of its presence on a forest walk, well before any visual sighting.
