One of the most widespread bat species in the Old World, found from Europe and Africa through Asia to Australia, forming some of the largest cave colonies of any bat where suitable roosts exist.
Roosts communally in caves, sometimes numbering many thousands of individuals, and hunts flying insects at night; a well-studied model species for bat migration and hibernation research elsewhere in its range, though Bornean populations are non-migratory.
