An unusually coloured woodpecker with warm rufous-brown plumage finely barred with black, notable for nesting inside active tree-ant nests, tolerated by the ants despite the apparent conflict.
Feeds heavily on ants, in keeping with its close association with ant nests, and forages both on tree trunks and in more open, disturbed habitat than many forest woodpeckers.
